Captain America: Symbol of Truth #14 has given Sam Wilson's sidekick a heartbreaking decision to make that could alter his future as a superhero.

Captain America: Symbol of Truth shows Marvel fans why Sam Wilson is indeed a great Captain America. He's more grounded and human than a super-soldier with a serum in his veins. Which is why Steve relented and listened to Sam in the Cold War event regarding the White Wolf and Dimension Z.

It's also why Carol Danvers wants Sam to help with the Avengers. She knows he's a leader and that even Captain Marvel needs a bedrock like him keeping gods, aliens and magical powerhouses steeped in reality. Unfortunately, come issue #14 (by Tochi Onyebuchi, Zé Carlos, Jesus Aburtov, Protobunker's Fer Sifuentes-Sujo and VC's Joe Caramagna), Sam's facing a massive conundrum with a trusted sidekick.

Marvel's Falcon Has a Cure For His Monstrous Side

The dilemma arises with Joaquín Torres, the latest Falcon. After being introduced in 2015 and experimented on by Dr. Malus, he was mutated. However, he began controlling his powers, taking on the mantle Sam once had due to his connection to Redwing. Sadly, the White Wolf captured and experimented on Joaquín more in Mohannda, all as a way to break Sam.

This chapter, though, has Mohannda's scientists making amends for warping Joaquín's mind and body, as they come up with a cure. Their diagnostics confirm his DNA's breaking down and damaging his physical frame, but the problem is, Joaquín isn't certain if he wants to take it. Sure, it might cure the monstrous side that emerged due to the White Wolf, but he doesn't know if it'll take away the Falcon powers that existed prior. More so, even though he's in perpetual pain, he's coping and controlling his new form. It's stronger, faster and more effective too, so he doesn't mind making this sacrifice. He'll remain a hybrid-creature, but he'd be empowered and emboldened to protect his family.

Marvel's Falcon Is Desperate to Remain a Hero

Apart from protecting his kin, Joaquín is addicted to being a superhero. When Sam flies over, the teen confesses he's scared he'll lose what makes him special. It nods to the dynamic of mutants taking cures in the books and movies. In X-Men: The Last Stand, Rogue cures herself, thinking being a mutant made her less human. In such stories, some felt it'd be a blessing, but like this Falcon, others thought it'd be a curse. To compound the drama in Joaquín's case, he just can't get over the fact he may no longer be a worthy sidekick.

However, Sam buoys him and dismisses this negativity, making it clear it's the man underneath the suits and person inside that makes him a hero -- it's not any abilities or powers. Sam makes it clear he'll always be a hero, while adamantly offering support, no matter what choice the youth makes.. It's a nuanced flip on the power and responsibility trope seen in the genre. In this case, Joaquín's wants these powers more than he needs it, but while it helps the public, he's not being kind or responsible to himself. Ultimately, the story doesn't reveal the final choice, but as Sam and Joaquín take flight for some fun, one can only hope he picks what's best for his mental and physical health.
